Wasn"t using easy enough tasks to measure what he was measuring: imitation. Gave 12 21 day old babies imitations to do it themselves; blind to condition. Tongue protrusions 40% of the time; mouth openings 8% of the time. Can only do tongue protrusions so easily, but the others are harder to do (anisfield 1996) Happened younger than they thought it would: deferred imitation. 6 month olds can imitate deferred imitations (collie & hayne, 1999) Push a big red button and a toy does something cool; show it to them one day and then the next day you don"t do it, and they imitate it themselves; seems interested. Forming an image in our head to imitate the actions again at a later day: memory. Cannot habituate to something that you don"t have a mental image of. Raised their kick rate 3 6 times; control group did not.
