PSYCH 2AA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Parenting Styles, Attachment Theory, Information Processing
Document Summary
The prosperity to make strong emotional bongs to particular individual is a basic component of human nature already present in germinal form in the neonate bowlby & ainsworth. Attachment occurs through satisfaction of impulses (suckle, satisfaction of psychosexual urge to suck) Synchrony baby wants to eat, mom feeds baby hunger. Harlow (1958) studies on dependency in monkeys. Monkey was nursed by the wire, but spends more time on the cloth mother (contact comfort) When monkey is frightened, he runs to the cloth mother (to touch/contact for soothing of fear) Even when the monkey is placed in a room with a wire mother, he still runs to the piece of cloth. Applying harlow to humans: unresponsive moms vs responsive dads (schaffer & emerson, 1964) When dads are more responsive, babies form a bigger attachment to them. Food is not the basis for attachment. Importance of being able to recognize difference between mom and others.
