Based on similarity of symptoms not the causes. facilitates communication between clinicians, researchers. Assume similar symptoms = similar disorder, with same causes. Bipolar disorders (esp. in children) - you never gave children bipolar disorder for a very long time, but then one doctor a few years ago wrote a paper on it because he found it in a couple of children. Now there are pharmaceutical treatments for it but they are very unhealthy even for adults. Comorbidity problem - if you have an individual that meets the criteria for one condition, there is a 67% change that they will meet the criteria for another disorder and another and another!!!
