Document Summary

Incongruence: when we have thoughts and feelings that are inconsistent with the ideal self. Then, they become a part of us and who we think we should be. Usually kept out of consciousness; like freud"s repression. Most people who conduct psychotherapy borrow ideas from rogers. Client and therapist must be in each other"s phenomenal field: paying attention to each other. Most important therapist must provide unconditional positive regard: put aside everything for caring, regardless of how a behaviour is viewed. Client must be aware of empathy and positive regard. Other theories suggest that the therapist is the knowledgeable guru. Rogers disagrees: client is in charge client centered therapy. Clients want answers from therapist; therapist believes that only the client knows, and therefore, the must figure things out by themselves. Expresses feelings more freely: this is the development of a therapeutic relationship. Client can describe their feelings more accurately: comes through the therapist"s reflection of what the client is saying.
