Document Summary

Were interested in looking at the accumulation of knowledge. Plato and aristotle early debaters in asking this question. Rationalism: says truth and knowledge is found within us. Empiricism: says truth and knowledge are found outside of ourselves by using our sense experiences. Developed the belief that knowledge and truth can be discovered by self-reflection. Used his senses to look for truth and knowledge in the world outside of him. Developed the dialectic method of discovering truth through conversations with fellow citizens. This gave way to an important think in scientific research: inquiry: this inquiry based method gave rise from greek philosophers to ask how are things truly learned. Discourse and reflection as tools for developing thinking owe much to socrates and plato: says you have to be a reflective thinker instead of just memorizing things. We see how these differ even in today"s society: ex: college vs. university, college = kinda roman, university = kinda greek.
