PSYCH 2NF3 Lecture 2: Introduction to Neuropsychology
Document Summary
First individuals to develop formal theory about behaviour. Human thoughts/thinking patterns/perceptions are products of the heart. Cardiac hypothesis - there is a "mind" and it resides in the heart. Makes sense because heart rate responds to behaviour. Heart is the same but the mind is what differs; the mind is what governs our behaviour - reason why peoples" behaviours differ. Believed brain = cooling system since it has a lot of fluid (cerebral spinal fluid) Read of aristotle"s work; mentalism (there is a mind) and cardiac hypothesis. Observed from patients" wounds, series of connected tubes starting from foot all the way to brain. Hypothesized - agreed with mentalism (there is a mind and it is different among individuals) but doesn"t agree with cardiac hypothesis. Believed mind resides in the ventricles (spaces in the brain) of the brain. Brain hypothesis - mind resides in the brain. Philosopher; influenced by religion (spiritual elements - non material)
