RELIGST 1B03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Structural Functionalism
Document Summary
Emile durkheim theory of structural functionalism he says religion has a cohesive e ect on societies. Basically religion is needed for society to function. This can be applied to any social group, eg. sports can be seen as a religion (because of the fans). Weber saw religion as a form of capitalism since christianity (particularly. Calvinism), promoted hard work which saw economic success as a sign of a favourable status in god"s eyes. Marx saw religion as people to escape from the injustices of a capitalist society eg. having to sell their labour as a commodity, not owning the means of production and therefore the capitalists control the workers.
