A group of people who intentionally choose to play significant roles in each others lives; strong emotional connections; no biological/legal relation. Role of agency: people play a role in constructing families. Construction of social policy, legislation, social recognition, and other rights have implications in people"s lives. Functionalism argues that the nuclear family is ideal form. Ascribed* statuses are conferred through the family (vs. achieved statuses) The family should be considered in response to social problems. Dysfunctions in the family threaten individuals, groups, and the broader society. Changes to other social institutions are a source of family-related problems.
