- Increasing in Canada and many other industrialized countries
- Reasons for this trend

- Sociological imagination- allows us to connect this to a greater context
- Caused by long-term decline in the numbers of young canadians who are living with a
partner
- Children from blended families leave home earlier than children whose parents have not
divorced
- Early departures from the parental home are associated with lower rates of home
ownership
- Gender differences- males are more likely to stay at home compared to females (females
cohabiting more often than males=greater stability)
Statistical data
- 2011 census: 42% of canadians aged 20-29 lived with at least one parent
- 2016 census: 35% of canadians aged 20-24 lived with at least one parent (in
ontario:42%;in cities like Toronto and Oshawa:50%)
- In 2011 59% of 20-24 year olds and 25% of 25-29 year olds lived with parents as
compared to 41.5% of 20-24 year olds and 11% of 25-29 year olds in 1981
