Transitions: changes in status and roles that occur over the life course, example: marriage, parenthood, divorce, school. Sociologists focus on the entry into and exit out of roles and statuses. Assumption that students are passive: students are expected to absorb information and do not have a say, there is no critical thinking nor discussions involved. Different aspects and activities outside of the work industry : example: working on an assignment is considered work. Manifest functions: the open, stated, and intended goals or consequences of activities within an organization or institution, example: transmission of knowledge through participation in schools. Latent functions: the hidden, unstated and sometimes unintended consequences of activities in an organization or institution, example: romantic relationships throughout participation in schools. Ontario education amendment act (learning to age 18), 2006, s. o. Example: child labour laws reinforce this legislation.
