2 copies of textbook on reserve @ mills. Social condition = something that you can see, is impacting a large group of people not just one individual. Also a social process, something is happening in our society that draws our attention to this problem. We see this as a problem that warrants and needs our attention, people must do something about it. We should think of social problems as impacting all of, or the broader society. A sociological approach to social problems wants to consider how these social problems are impacting large groups of people. Objective elements: measurable features of a social condition (ex: poverty rate, crime rat, drop out rate) Allows us to see how social problems change over time. Subjective elements: people"s interpretations of social conditions (morality, meritocracy) Social constructionism: a sociological approach that examines the ways that people interact to create a shared social reality (berger and luckmann (1966)) Social constructionism is not about false knowledge .
