His father was very concerned - wanted to keep closer tabs on him: managed to convince marx to transfer to the university of berlin (closer to home) Marx took some elective courses in philosophy. Marx switched from law to philosophy: did not please his father. Ended up being blacklisted by the ministry of education in berlin. His thesis supervisor made a lot of controversial statements that did not please the conservative russian government. Ministry of education fired the supervisor - marx = guilty by association. Found employment as a journalist: worked for german newspapers on and off for decades.
