His father, grandfather and great-grandfather had all been rabbis. He thought of doing that too, but turned away from religion in his teens. He became a non-believer/atheist who was fascinated by religion and the role it played in society. He also came from a close-knit supportive family and learned of the value of hard work and saving money. Outstanding student, went ahead two grades in elementary school. Managed to get into fancy college in france but became dissatisfied with his studies was learning things that didn"t interest him (e. g. latin, greek etc. ) He became interested in science, scientific methods and moral principles, and morality/moral issues, and the emerging field of sociology (during his final year at college). Comte had coined the term sociology in the 1830s. Durkheim decided that sociology would help him understand pressing social issues that existed in french society, which would improve the society. Spent time teaching philosophy in high schools around paris.
