The role identities we develop depend on the social positions available to us in society. Social identities: a de nition of the self in terms of the de ning characteristics of a social group (tajfel and turner (1979)) nationality, political af liation etc. Each of us associates certain characteristics with members of speci c groups. If you de ne yourself as a member of the group, these characteristics become standards for your thoughts, feelings, and actions. Premise: behaviour is a product of our attempts to control perceptions of situations in ways that con rm the meanings associated with our identities. Control system: thermostat - have equilibrium = want to have equilibrium with situation and identity, consistency. Components: identity standard, input, comparator, output.
