Seek meaning within self, relationships, nature, with a deity. Religiosity and spirituality both involve a search for the sacred. Religiosity (but not spirituality) additionally prescribes religious involvement. Cope with stressors: negative life events, illness, trauma. Cope with fear of death: terror management theory. Same losses of older adults are beyond their control. But have control over their own religiosity and spirituality. High spirituality --> higher self-actualization and meaning in life than high religiosity + low spirituality (i. e. , empty religion group) Low religiosity + low spirituality similar to high spirituality groups (happy atheists?) Internalization: transforming a religious belief from external to internal. Should enact religious behavior, not because one chooses to. If do not enact, feel guilt and anxiety. Introjection = higher anxiety and depression, lower self-esteem and self. Introjection = higher anxiety and depression, lower self-esteem and self actualization.
