Written by a grade 3 student, this displays how hurrying, materialism and nurturing cultures impact children. Marianne, was writing a story when her teacher takes it from her and notices mistakes. From then on, people started treating marianne for what she is and not for what they want her to be. What we see here is that marianne has found her voice and rallies against what she believes to be expectations far beyond her reach. From the materialism culture point of view, she is seen thinking and feeling that her academic demands are excessive. It"s not that she"s unwilling to achieve, she just realizes that she needs more time and effort to meet the expectations. It would appear that her parents expectations of her are also above and beyond her, so she advises them.
