HPED 2507 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Amniotic Sac, Bladder Cancer, Kidney Stone Disease
Document Summary
Body composed ~ 60% water by weight (% greater in children). Range re: % lean muscle mass: adipose tissue. Largest component (by weight) of our diet. Can only survive a few days without. Functions: transport: brings nutrients & removes waste products. 1: universal solvent: dissolves substances for metabolic activities, cleansing agent: kidneys filter waste and excrete with water (urine, lubricant and cushion: joint, spinal cord, amniotic sac, body temperature regulation: sweat. Increases: menstruation, high dietary intake of sodium (salt) Sweat lost in exercise: high protein low carb diets. Fluctuations in water weight do not reflect gain or loss of body fat. Consumption needs - replace water lost in: urine. Excess - water intoxication/hyponatremia (low sodium lots of water) Water drawn out of salivary glands mouth becomes dry. Pituitary releases a hormone that causes the kidneys to conserve water. If deficiency develops slowly thirst can protect; deficiency develops quickly thirst may not. Thirst mechanism less efficient with age; drink regularly.
