Document Summary
Imagery is a sensory experience that occurs in the absence of usual external stimuli. In using imagery, athletes create or recreate an experience in their mind that seems real-life like: similar to actual performance but only experienced in your mind. Imagined events have a similar effect on the nervous system and mental processes compared to actual events: the brain doesn"t know the difference if imagined event is vivid enough. Imagery works through developing and refining psychological skills. Factors affecting imagery effectiveness: type of task cognitive skills improve the most compared to motor skills, playing experience more experience performers benefit the most from imagery. Imagining ability can be improved through practice. Internal perspective: athletes see the image from their own eyes, viewing the image through a camera lens, greater neuromuscular activity compared to external imagery. Internal imagery plays a significant role in creating a kinesthetic feel, uses 5 senses.
