Document Summary
Strong cultures can also be a liability under some circumstances. Culture clash: strong cultures pushed together in a merger or acquisition can result in a culture clash. Two important factors explain how cultures are built and maintained: founder"s role, socialization. The founder"s role: many strong cultures reflect the values of an organization"s founder, stories about the founder provide continuing reinforcement of the organization"s key values, management strongly shapes the organization"s culture. Identifying people as fast trackers provides new members with role models whose actions and views are consistent with the culture. What is most important about this process is the consistency among these steps and their mutually reinforcing properties that make for a strong culture. One way to learn about the culture of an organization is to examine the symbols, rituals, and stories that characterize the organization"s way of life. For insiders, these symbols, rituals, and stories are mechanisms that teach, communicate, and reinforce the company"s culture.
