Development of primary sex characteristics: sex organs. Development of secondary sex characteristics: pubic hair, axila hair, breast development, voice change in males. With the onset of menstruation in females. Production of sperm in males (cid:498)to grow and mature(cid:499) The end of childhood and the beginning of adulthood. In canada; children are maturing physiology at a younger age. Second to the prenatal period as the phase of most rapid growth. Weight and volume of lungs increase- pneumothorax more common. Stomach and intestines increase in size and capacity- they are hungry. Female- ovaries start to produce and release, menstruation, hormones (estrogen and progesterone) Motor- some clumsiness at first (especially with rapid growth) Heightened emotions, worries, lack of self- confidence, peer pressure. Sexual uncertainties/ misconceptions and confusion (nurses have to dispel myths) Sti- chlamydia, herpes, gonorrhea, syphilis, hiv (in 2012, increasing, public health concern)
