Document Summary
Cleft lip & palate: there is a fairly high incidence of clefting in newborns, for every 700-1000 live births, there is one baby born with some type of clefting. In newfoundland, there are approximately 10-12 babies with some sort ofc clefting each year: 70% of defects are isolated, 25% are genetic, and 5% are associated with a syndrome. Milk fills and flows into babies mouth when the baby compresses the nipple. Monitoring weight gain: because babies with clefts often have trouble feeding ,it is important to monitor weight to ensure they are receiving enough nutrition to support growth and development. If a baby is premature, it may be recommended to monitor growth more frequently. Cleft lip & palate: cleft lip is a congenital split in the upper lip. Cleft palate: cleft palate is a congenital split in the roof of the mouth, cleft palate usually accompanies cleft lip.
