Document Summary
Hepatitis: hepatitis is inflammation and swelling of the liver. This can be acute or chronic and can occur as a result of several different causes (e. g virus, chemical, medication reaction, or other diseases) For example, inflammation of the liver can occur from alcohol abuse or liver disease: the majority of hepatitis cases are as a result of the following viruses: Is self limiting with regeneration and no scarring. Ranges from asymptomatic (sub-clinical) to fulminant (meaning severe and sudden in onset: chronic active hepatitis (sub-acute): Has progressive destruction with uncertain regeneration, scarring is common. Causes the liver to be inflamed over the lifetime. Patients will usually need a liver transplant due to progressive destruction: an individual may have carrier status, meaning they have the ability to pass the illness on to someone else. Carrier status may last entire life: serologic markers are antigens and antibodies that can be used to determine the type, infectious status, immunity, and carrier status.
