Most people report they do not get enough sleep. Partially secondary to stress hormones: advances ageing effects and reduced longevity. No consensus: adaptive theory: sleeping serves a protection function. E. g. , reduces dangerous night activities including predation from nocturnal animals: we work best in the daylight, subject to more accident during the night. Accidently walk over a cliff: growth: promotes growth. Growth hormone is secreted during deep sleep, and children sleep more than adults: particularly stages 3 and 4 sleep. Kids spend more time in these stages of sleep than adults: restorative theory: sleep allows for recovery from use during the day. Vivid, emotional, and sometimes bizarre: a lot of emotional tone in dreams, western cultures often have depressing themes, a lot of negative emotions during dreams. Lucid dreams: we are aware we are dreaming and may test to see if this is true.
