Addiction: a compulsive craving for and use of a drug despite adverse consequences (to person or others: they use the drug even though it is causing harm in their lives. Diminishing effect of drug following repeated use and takes higher dose to produce the same previous effect: drug no longer produces the same drug after being used a lot.
