Test must function the same in different groups of people (so individuals do not get different scores because they are of different ethics or countries) Similar items on a test must relate both to one another and to the material of interest. Process of obtaining meaningful test scores from a standardization (group of people who have taken the same test) or normative sample through the use of uniform procedures is called standardization. Distributions: test results from large populations tend to follow particular patterns. Normal distribution (normal curve): a statistical pattern in which most people achieve fairly similar scores at or near the middle of the distribution, bell shaped with smaller groups of equal size at each end. Normal distribution scores of most people fall in the vicinity of the median score: median: the score exactly in the middle of a distribution.
