Chameleon effect: tendency to unconsciously mimic the expression, gestures and postures of
others
Social role: a set of norms ascribed to a person’s social position
Conformity: the tendency to yield to a social pressure
obedience: the act of following direct commands, usually given by an authority figure

Module 78: social relations
Group- an organized stable collection of individuals who share a common identity and which
the members are aware of and influence one another
Group dynamic: how membership or participation in a group influence our thoughts and
behaviours
Social facilitation: improvement in performance because others are present
Social loafing: tendency to exert less effort in a group task than one would if working alone
Group polarization: intensification of initial attitudes following discussion within groups
Group think: faulty group decision making as a result of trying to hard to agree
Deindividuation: loss of self-awareness or self-restraint in group setting
Altruism: self-sacrificing behaviour carried our for the benefit of others
Aggression: a broad range of behaviour intended to harm others.
Stages of a loving relationship:
1. Exploration stage: the partners try out the possible reward and cost of a relationship
2. Bargaining stage: they implicitly negotiate the terms of a relationship
3. Institutionalization stage- shared expectations emerge and relationship is exclusive
Types of relationship
1. Secure attachment: are comfortable,do not fear becoming too close or being abandoned
2. Avoidant: uncomfortable with intimacy, have difficulty trusting others
3. Anxious ambivalent- insecure and worry that their partners do not really love them and
will leave.

Stress- a state brought on by a situation that threatens or appears to threaten, one sense of
well being and ability to cope.
Stressor- anything that triggers stress response
Acute stressor- short term stress
Chronic stressor: long term pain
frustration: an emotion people experience when thwarted in pursuit of a goal
pressure: an expectation or demand that someone act in a certain way.
