Abnormal psychology: the scientific study of psychological disorders, no universal definition of
abnormal behaviour. some suggest that, dysfunctional behaviour is too much or too little of a
normal behaviour.
Most psychologist agree that psychological disorders share four key features.
-deviance: behaviours (thoughts or emotions) differ from societal expectations (norms)
-distress: behaviour (thoughts to emotions) cause significant distress or unhappiness
-dysfunction: interfere with daily functioning (work-relationships)
-danger: some disorders may lead to self-injury or hostilely to others (likely expectation rather
than the rule)
symptoms: physical, behaviour or mental “features” associated with a disorder.
