Document Summary

Lecture 3: basil statistical concepts and frequency distributions. A research idea can be broken down into a set of variables (variables are elements, features or factors that are liable to vary or change). These variables may represent an event, situation, behaviour or characteristic. There can be variables with categorical properties such as sex (male or female or other) There can be variables with numerical properties (iq or age) Nominal scale: a scale of measurement where events are assigned to categories. Think of it as foot ball players wearing numbers on their jerseys, the numbers are simply labels but have no meaning other than to label! A couple things to remember is that firstly the value does not necessarily better or worse just because one player has a number one on his jersey does not technically make him the best or worst player. Also they cannot have intermediate value such as a decimal.
