Focused on emotion and subjectivity rather than something that looked real of like the natural world. Instead of capturing a scene, it was concern with the minimal detail. He feels like his work is valued for painting this way. Modernism is a rejection of tradition so this artist is slightly paradoxical. Chang yu, study of peonies vs. xu beihong, taming the lions. They both came from diff backgrounds, diff in training, pol and lifestyles even though they both studied in paris.
