Art history week 2 : war, looting and victory monuments : the ancient world in the near. Ci(cid:272)ero"s prose(cid:272)utio(cid:374) of gaius verres: cicero wrote essays which were widely read in france and england in the 18th and 19th centuries. They were used in public debates about the concept of cultural property: verres lived in the first century bc and for a time was the governor of sicily. Cicero depicted him as a greedy art collector who stole cult statues from religious buildings: the history of the prosecution. Used his profits from his first year as governor for himself and even (cid:271)ragged a(cid:271)out it, ga(cid:448)e the se(cid:272)o(cid:374)d year"s to his la(cid:449)yer a(cid:374)d his third year"s to the jury. The prosecution was very successful and verres voluntarily exiled himself to. Cicero published the one speech he gave in the forum and then 5 others which he would have said if the trial was longer.
