ASTR 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: House Arrest, Ellipse, Retina
Document Summary
Two photons arrive at well separated places on retina; landing on diff pixels". Can be seen coming from two separate objects. If two photons arrive closely side by side can"t be distinguished. Galileo did not invent telescope, just saw potential for astronomy. Thought there were seas (called them maria) and mountains (appeared jagged and sharp); moon is imperfect. Was able to calculate how tall the mountains were with estimated size of moon and using trig. Sunspots go once around every 25 days; important because sun is able to spin, proving that a planet can spin with out ying into pieces. Speculated what saturn"s shape was; thought it was 3 pieces then thought it was an odd ellipse shape. Couldn"t see the rings at one point; rings are quite thin; perspective and angle can cause the rings to vanish". Saw thousands and thousands of stars out there. Noted that we are not unique, that there is so much more out there.
