PHYS P20 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Louis De Broglie, Bohr Model
Document Summary
19th century, structure of atoms was starting to be created. Knew that hydrogen atom contained one proton and one electron. Scientists couldn"t think of an arrangement for the particles. Knew protons were in the nucleus and electrons were arranged around nucleus at a distance. For hydrogen, electron couldn"t be circling or stationary as they would be attracted to the nucleus. Bohr proposed first working model of the hydrogen atom. Only allowed to have discrete values of angular momentum and its orbit around the nucleus. Electron could only orbit certain orbits at a distance from nucleus. Lightwave of hydrogen was studied but never explained. By predicting the value of orbits that an electron could have, bohr"s model also predicted the wavelengths of the lines in the hydrogen spectrum. Don"t know why only those orbits were allowed. Suggested matter particles, protons, electrons, and atoms could sometimes act like waves.
