Document Summary
Topic 1 - introduction to the nervous system. Interneurons any neuron that doesn"t fit the above two categories. Pns and between the pns and the cs: tract nerves that are entirely within the brain and spinal cord. Describe the spinal reflex arc the instinctive behavior like when you experience pain and jerk your hand away: controlled entirely at the level of the spinal cord; the brain is not directly involved. They are produced in glands throughout the body including the brain. The main distinction between hormones and neurotransmitters is the distance over which they must travel to exert their effect on cell targets. Describe the structure of the neuron: excitatory synapse activated when a terminal button releases a transmitter substance that excites the postsynaptic neurons on the other side of the synapse. This excitation makes it more likely the postsynaptic neuron will fire.
