Document Summary
People are very social beings, especially when in distress: people seek out social support groups to relieve stress and seek comfort. Removed baby monkeys from mothers after birth. Noticed an interesting phenomenon: infant monkeys were very attached to the cloth pad. They would be upset when it was removed for cleaning. Created the experiment of having a wire mother and a cloth mother, some proving food, some not. Studied if food made a different as to what they preferred. Also studied their fear to see where they would run to for comfort. Through this, he found that the cloth mother, regardless of food provision won each and every time. Introduced the idea that attachment isn"t only about food, rather it"s about being secure and physically comfortable. How to ethically study this phenomenon in humans: stranger anxiety. Around 8-9 months of age, infants have a separate between people that are known and people that are not.
