Psyc 241 week 7 lec 15 oct 28. Researchers watched students playing pool at a student union. Confederates went and stood near the pool players, watched them. Consensus in several species for social facilitation. Ex: cockroaches, not based on their self-esteem since its not existent. Observation condition: alone, watched by two other participants, in the presence of blindfolded observers. Found that the number of answers were high when others were watching them than in the alone of blindfolded conditions. Some evaluation apprehension is necessary for dominant response to occur. Some argue there is some evaluation apprehension even if blindfolded or alone, might want to feel like you did a good job for the experimenter. Even if no outsiders are watching, the experimenters are which creates some apprehension still. Evaluation apprehension not necessary, but the effects will only appear if the person is distracted. In this case, would not have to be a social stimulus: anything distracting should have this effect.
