SOCY 210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Time Point, Time Series, Social Impact Assessment
Document Summary
: we are interested in seeing how people cooperate and work together. Enables us to investigate further from commonly held beliefs or hunches. We are interested in finding empirical evidence, quantitative and qualitative data. Alternatives to social research (what we would do instead): Rely on authority, someone you can trust (parents, news, teachers, etc. ), but we can be misinformed, overestimate their experience. Misuse of authority tells you something to persuade you. Tradition, we are used to it and it has happened for a long time. Traditional practices may influence how we think social processes work. Traditional ways can be flawed, because it may be good at one point in time, but distorted as time goes on (dating). Common sense, we go with what makes sense to us. Problem is it can generate different fallacies, things that we think are going on are actually not.
