Ranking by volume: amazon river- longest river 1, congo river- congo is 10th longest river, yangtze river-3rd longest river. The steeper the rivers gradient, the faster the flow. Waterfalls have retreated back upstream 11km since the end of the last ice age. Floodplain: a broad belt of low, flat ground boarding river channel that floods regularly. Lake: body of standing water that is enclosed on all sides by land. Saline lake (salt flats): a lake with no surface outlet will be salty. World"s largest lakes: caspian, lake superior, lake victoria. Substrate: a substance or layer that underlines the water body. All land on earth is a water shed. A water shed is often called a drainage basin. Divide: is the location where 2 watersheds meet. Uplands: connect the divide with the valley or lowland areas below. Outlet: is where the main channel leaves the watershed. Large watershed tributaries form smaller watersheds called sub-basins.
