GCM 750 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: 3D Printing, Reprap Project, Polytetrafluoroethylene
Document Summary
Components of a simple extruder setup hot end. A threaded tube with heat break (where hot end begins/cold end ends) 360 degree fans seen on e3d products like the v6, or reprap hexagon, used to wick away the excess heat from the hot end. On a direct drive setup a nema motor with a hubbed gear. The direct drive is most common on cartesian 3d printers because it is easy to implement and reliable. On a bowden drive setup you have a ptfe teflon tube with a pressure lock. Bowden drive is most common on delta 3d printers. Motor is directly connected (easy and reliable) Weight of motor causes jerks by rapid quick stopping, and vibration which can reduce print quality (artifacts, skip steps) Direct drive is better for flexible filaments. Weight of stepper motor is removed off the carriage. Must find a place to mount the motor. Ptfe tube required so filament is not exposed.
