In the old testament there is a large prohibition against worshipping images of a god. Pagans were opposed to not have pictures of gods, so christianity have a dodge they did not make sculptures (3d), but it"s alright to make pictures bc a picture isn"t a person. Another argument: in order to be a good christian, you needed to know a whole bunch of stories, and since they are illiterate, they tell stories in pictures. Iconic art: representation of a symbol that shows an idea stands for something. Alpha and omega are the beginning and end of the alphabet, it also the beginning and end of time.
