Japan repelling mongols, closed borders, fought each other. Eu vikings, warring tribes, rome fell to vandals. Carolingian: return of stability, recover poli/econ/culture, no more classical/byz. Medieval japan: also distinct style, less chinese influence. Collapse of rome --> fusion of gr/roman and local tribes e. g. celts and new tradition of. Reliquary: contains body part of holy person, like stupa. Decorated with medieval (copy roman) cameo, signet rings, local interlacing/polychrome (tribal) V remote from classical influences, lots of artifacts because unstable and hid under ground or gave to church treasury. Sutton hoo: buried entire ship with people, king, grave goods. Hinged clasp: v north eu- polychrome, design all over, colorful, zoomorphic, interlaced snakes. For celts and angles, snakes = wisdom, touching earth, immortality and power. See heraldic devices- boar: ferocious, fast = warrior, prob kind clan.
