PSY 105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Herbert Benson, Nyishi (Tribe), The Relaxation Response
Document Summary
The process by which people try to manage/reduce/tolerate the perceived discrepancy between the demands and resources they appraise in a stressful situation. Not so great strategies: giving up, blaming yourself, striking out at others, self-indulgence, and defensive coping. Relatively healthful efforts that people make to deal with stress events. Make sure the coping is task relevant. This is a conscious effort to rationally evaluate your options so that you can try to solve your problems. Start with a realistic appraisal of your stress and of your coping resources. Self deception may help in the short term but not in the long term. Learn to recognize and regulate disruptive emotional reactions to stress so you can focus more on constructive coping. People not only cope with a negative event, they are transformed by the experience. Some people show positive response patterns and thrive. Resilience trajectory seems to be the most common way people respond to adversity.
