Binet & simon asked by french govt. to develop objective psychological test to identify students in needs of special education. 1905 developed rst iq test (diagnostic tool to measure overall thinking ability) Naming objects, generating meaning of words, drawing from memory, similarities. All tapped into higher mental processes and abstract thinking. Cattell and horn argue that intelligence is a mix of two capacities. Capacity to learn new ways of solving problems, or uid intelligence. Accumulated knowledge of the world we gain over time, or crystallized intelligence. Fluid intelligence more strongly correlated with g, but also declines with age. Some theorists argue that there are entirely different domains of intellectual skill.
