4 goals of psychology: describe affect, behaviour, & cognitions. I. e. what are they: explain / understand causes of these affects, behaviours, & cognitions. Emic(perspective of native) vs. etic (perspective of outsider) approaches. Tendency to seek evidence that supports our hypothesis. Tendency to stick to our initial beliefs even when evidence is contradictory. Set of claims that seem scientific but lack defenses from bias. Warning signs: overreliance on anecdotes (personal stories) Using personal stories to support or prove a claim (not scientific, because not properly tested and is only a hypothesis: meaningless psychobabble. Using big meaningless words to appear smart and to convince. Real science brings the jargon down to a level so it"s easily understandable to people. If there is difficult jargon, there must be definition for it. Do not use sentences . this is proof that real scientists do not use this sentence.
