Binet came up with a way to explain the intelligence of a person based on how well they do on the test versus others their age (and with people with the same scores at different ages) Binet"s concept of mental age led to wilhelm stern"s development of the intelligence quotient (iq) This works for children, but not adults over 16. Modern iq tests use a deviation iq that eliminates age effects. Compares each person to what is normal for his or her own age group. Mental age / chronological age x 100 = iq. Looks at age groups but mostly within age range. The age corresponding to the average individual"s performance on an intelligence test. Expression of a person"s iq relative to his or her same- aged peers.
