Concept race emerged in context of european domination. Science defended the establishment of race and categorization of individuals based on race. Race proven to be a social construct. People different because they were genetically made to be different, not because of race. Development of racial categories related to european domination and power, but also related to exploitation and slavery. Racialization challenges idea that race is objectively measured, emphasizes the social construction of race. Visible minorities, people of colour are other terms. Problematic: by using term minorities, we are acknowledging that there is a dominant group. Groups everyone as minorities and everyone else is dominant group. Gives imbalance power between majority group and visible minority. Belief that one racial group is superior to another. Often think of racism as more over offensive jokes, violence, hate crimes, but it occurs in different ways.
