Pioneers of social theory ignored the movements of nationalism that were shaping their lives. They did not make nationalism into a clear object of knowledge or try to understand why nationalism was becoming a modern event . Assumed nations were natural/always existed, or nations were temporary. 1980"s-today nationalism has been popular in theory and social analysis- there is an increasing number of new nations primarily from former colonies of european empires and recent revolts against the soviet union. Anti-colonial movements were national liberation movements- oppressed people were in revolt and were claiming the status of nations and right to popular sovereignty. 20th century was the age of nationalism. Globalization is the core principle of nationalism- notion that people come together by a shared culture/history/language. They demand the loyalty and sacrifice of its members. Nationalism= belief in the nation as a fundamental or core community. Nationalism is a driving force/ideology of a movement.
