Some were smuggled over the border to enter canada. By 1880 the immigrant population in canada is primarily french, british, and germans: these were usually german speaking and german ethnic europeans as well as french speaking. Europeans that were from belgium: they were located entirely in atlantic canada, in quebec, and in ontario, starting in 1870;s you start to see british migrating to vancouver from california in search of the gold rush.
