ETC216 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Jojoba Oil, Corneocyte, Desquamation
Document Summary
It is the desquamation or removal of dead corneum cells. Types of exfoliation methods: mechanical - includes all granular peelings with exfoliating ingredients that are added to skin products (often cleansers and masks) to remove dead cells off the skin"s surface. As the scrub is pressed against and passed over the skin, the resulting friction causes corneocyte cells, almost ready to be shed, to be literally bumped or rolled off the skin. These ingredients can include ground nuts (ie. almonds, apricots), various seeds and polyethylene (a type of soluble plastic) or hard beads made from hydrogenated (the process of changing oils into solid fats) jojoba oil. Beads tend to be gentler and not as sharp as they are spherical and roll across the skin instead of possibly scratching as ground natural substances can cause. Mechanical exfoliations are often used in a facial in conjunction with the brushing machine and steamer.
