Parenting can be described as a process of role transition. Family centered care the family being the primary source of care. Parenting process requires cognitive, affective, knowledge and motor skills. Attachment- the process by which a parent comes to love and accept a child, vice-versa. The period after birth is important to mother-to-infant attachment. Attachment requires physical contact and early involvement b/w parent and infant to develop a strong link. It is facilitated by positive feedback, social, verbal, and nonverbal responses. It works best if the mutuality fits the parent"s expectations. Getting acquainted with the infant and having an understanding of the sleep and awake states is important. Claiming process period families identify the new baby (similarities, diff, uniqueness). It can be negative when a parent interoperates the infant"s norm as causing discomfort, negative. Parents develop an image of the ideal infant. The more the ideal infant resembles the real infant enables the bonding process.
