Interpersonal Relations and Conflict Management
Communication: the process of acting upon information
1. Human communication:
Is the process of making sense out of the world and sharing that sense with others by
creating meaning, using verbal and nonverbal messages
2. Interpersonal communication:
A distinctive, transactional form of human communication involving mutual influence,
usually for the purpose of managing relationships
Philosopher Martin buber-1878-1965
- Presented the concept of true dialogue
- I-it- relationship vs I thou ( I- You) relationship
- All human communication ranges from impersonal to interpersonal
Mutual influence: all partners are affected by the transaction
Being present means to give your full attention to the other person
Relationship: ongoing connection made with another person through interpersonal
communication
3. Impersonal communication:
Occurs when we treat people as objects, or when we respond to their roles rather than
who they are as unique persons
Other types of communication:
Mass communication: one person issues the same message to many people and is
usually not physically present. E.g. Radio, TV
Public communication: addressing large audience in person
Small group communication: group of people (3-15) get together for common purpose
and mutually influence on another
Intrapersonal communication: communication with oneself
E.g. talks to self, argues with self, interrupts self while arguing with self
The communication Process:
The most basic components of communication are
1. Source: originator of thought or emotion who encode message
2. Message: written, spoken, and unspoken element of communication
3. Channel: pathway message is sent ( text, phone, voice)
4. Receiver: person who interprets message
